How To Get Long Lasting Decks By Hiring Atlanta Deck Builder

Residents of Atlanta can hire an Atlanta deck builder to ensure a long-lasting deck for their home. Quality pressure-treated deck boards are suitable for building durable decks. Vinyl composite boards are another great option for constructing decks at home. The thicker the wooden boards used in the construction of a deck, the higher the chances that the deck will survive many generations.

Choosing Construction Material

Experienced deck builders in Atlanta will look for wood with fewer knots as they provide more stability and longevity to your deck. You can also ask your deck builder to use special deck boards that have grooves cut at the bottom and have rounded edges. These type of deck boards ensure that the boards do not do not warp.

Composite Decking vs. Wooden Decking
Composite decking offers many advantages over traditional wood materials. With composites you don't need to worry about sealing, staining, splintering and rotting. These advantages also come with a hefty price. Some hardwoods also offer very low maintenance but also are offered at a premium. Traditional wooden decking however offers a natural beauty that cannot be matched by composites. So, find an Atlanta deck company that gives you the option to choose either composite decking or wooden decking.

Higher Value and Greater Happiness

Decks increase the value of your home by adding an extra living area to it, where you can spend quality time with your family members and guests. A long-lasting deck built by an Atlanta deck builder will increase your happiness as you enjoy usin g your deck year after year. Durable decks built by expert deck builders will get you a higher value for your home if you ever decide to sell.

Get References for Deck Builders in Atlanta

If they have hired a deck builder before, they should be able to refer you to one. You can also search online to find great deck builders in your area.

Atlanta Deck Company Reviews

Online reviews of deck building services in Atlanta can also help you find a reputable Atlanta deck company. The experiences of others can provide insight to help you select the right deck builders. If you are working on a limited budget, go for the company that offers the best deck building services at the lowest cost possible. How to Choose the Best Deck Builder?

Hunting for a trustworthy deck builder who can deliver top quality performance can become a tricky task. Even looking in the phone book doesn't yield much of a result. When seeking a contractor a smart move can be made by surfing on internet to find a deck builder who can work efficiently, with craftsmanship and at a reasonable price. Hence, allow your finger to do the surfing for the best deck builder and save your valuable time.

The stressful task of choosing a best deck builder can be tackled with the help of a few tips:

1. The best deck builder may not always work at the cheapest rate or may not charge the most for top quality work. When money and quality matter, choose your deck builder by researching the work of several builders, getting feedback from their customers, collecting quotes from those builders, comparing their work within a given time frame, and making note of the materials that deck builders used for construction.
2. When a quote is received from a deck builder remember to specifically ask about the materials' cost and quality of materials that will be used. It's probable that good deck builders will choose best materials, but you should always ask upfront. Unfortunately the higher quality materials will drive up the total cost. For example, cost of cedar or IPE wood decking will generally be higher than standard pine, but it's the best option to build a lasting wood structure. Cedar built deck will be more resistant to bug invasion. The same way pressure treated lumbers will cost more than untreated lumbers, and anti-corrosive and resistant hardware materials will also cost more. If you want your deck to last, material costs will most likely be higher.

3. Always keep in mind to ask the would-be deck builder about previous work in the area, where you can analyse builder's construction quality and deck building aesthetics. Try to ask the deck owner about satisfaction with the work done by the respective deck builder. Be sure to ask if there have been any problems with the deck builder's workmanship as the structure has aged.

4. As they say experience counts, this definitely applies when you go to choose a deck builder. Ensure that your chosen deck builder can proficiently execute your requirements in the form of your professionally built deck. Ultimately, internet surfing for the best deck builders along with visits to that deck builder's past projects can help you make a wise choice for choosing a best deck builder.

Build a Simple Deck

I cant promise you a beachfront view, but I know youll enjoy relaxing on this simple deck wherever you choose to build it. Since its at ground level, you dont have to fuss with challenging railings or footings. All you need are basic carpentry tools and a relatively flat area in your yard or garden. The foundation is nothing more than 4x6 treated timbers buried in the soil, with decorative joists and construction-grade cedar decking and a bench. Follow the instructions for detailed measurements and building techniques.

Materials List:

(2) 4x6x12 Treated Timbers

(9) 2x6x10 Cedar Joists

(2) 2x6x10 Cedar for Blocking

(1) 2x12x10 Cedar Bench Supports

(2) 2X6X10 Cedar Bench Tops

(22) 2x6x12 Cedar Decking

(32) Metal Corner Brackets

3 lbs. Galv. Joist Hanger Nails

2 lbs. No. 8 Galv. Box Nails

10 lbs. 16d Galv. Casing Nails

1 lb. 3-in. Galv. Deck Screws

Tool List:

Shovel

Square

Tape Measure

Level

Compass

Chalk Line

Jigsaw

Hammer

Circular Saw

Hearing and Eye Protection

Gloves

1.) Dig the 4x6 timbers into the soil, leaving about 1-1/2 in. of the top exposed. The timbers must be parallel and the diagonal measurements must be equal.

2.) Cut each treated 2x6 joist to 10 ft. Cut a decorative curve on each end before installing them onto the 4x6 treated timbers.

3.) Lay out the joist spacing so the joists are on 16-in. centers. Cut the blocks to fit between the joists. The first set of blocks (one on each side) will be 13-1/4 in., while the remainder will be 14-1/2 in. long. Toenail each joist to the timber. Be sure the ends of all the joists align with each other as you toenail them in place.

4.) Nail your steel corner brackets to the joists and each block between with 1-1/4 in. galvanized joist hanger nails. The blocks add stability and give the deck a finished look.

5.) Start nailing the 2x6 decking from one side, leaving a 1-1/2 in. overhang. Keep the decking straight and use a 16d galvanized nail as a spacer. Depending on the spacing, you may need to rip the last piece of decking to maintain the 1-1/2 in. overhang. Once the decking is nailed, crosscut the lengths, leaving a 1-1/2 in. overhang. Be sure to use a chalk line to establish a straight guideline before cutting.

6.) Cut the bench supports from 2x12 lumber. Notch the decking to accept the bench supports. Be sure to toenail the backside of the seat support to the decking for added stability. Be sure the supports are square to the deck surface, then screw the 2x6 bench tops to the supports with 3-in. galvanized screws.

Now its time to relax and enjoy your new deck.

Did You Decide on The Best Fence Contractor on Your Last Job - United Fence and Deck

Look for a recognized fence company There's nothing wrong with a brand new business, but where did they come from? Do they have knowledge? Did they recently break away from a recognised company and precisely why? You want to look for a licensed contractor who can easily communicate true expert knowledge to you. With many satisfied customers and over twenty five years of experience, http://www.unitedfenceanddeck.com/ is a top pick for . , Annapolis, and the Easternshore.

Call References Ask to check out recently installed jobs to make sure you like the present style of installation. Not all fencing businesses do work in the very same manner. Speaking with earlier clients is a good idea. They can provide you with an even better idea about the business you are hiring. Enquire about the character from the staff, their own trustworthiness, as well as their integrity.

Are they licensed and insured? You might be kept responsible for any kind of damages and or accidental injuries that take place on your residence.

You need a Fencing Installment Specialist A contractor who's too broad might lack the knowledge needed to provide you with the best installment as well as service that you deserve and need.

Select a fence contractor who teaches in house workers. Sub-contracted individuals work on their own convenience or on many tasks at once making their work ethic much less trustworthy than in-house staff employees. This will usually result in workers with increased experience and loyalty. Additionally, there will be better communication in regards to the job at hand and more rapid progress in completing the set up.

Ask about the installation procedure Will the installation technician drill down the proper size hole? Right here are the common sizes: 6" - 8" diameter hole for chain link secure fencing; 8" - 10" diameter hole for wood secure fencing; and 10" - 12" diameter hole for vinyl fencing. Most locations have inspections for the depth of post openings only.

Learn what type of fencing you would like then request a quote. Don't forget, you get what you pay for most likely, so the lowest estimate isn't always the 1 you need to pick. Sometimes an estimate will be out of line and it probably is.

Ask regarding the payment method. If you feel uncomfortable regarding providing any company a payment in advance, then you most likely should keep looking until you feel right. Fence organizations typically request a payment in advance, generally 25% to 33% of overall estimate. That not only will pay for a portion of the supplies but it lets the contractor know you would like him to perform the work. If you feel uneasy about providing any contractor a payment in advance, the chances are you should keep searching till you feel happy.

No matter what your secure fencing needs, you could rely on United Fence & Deck to fulfill them. Our reputation is a direct product of our family-oriented approach to business. We focus on our customers' happiness by providing them with nothing but the best. 3 Important Factors to Consider when Building a Deck around a Pool or Spa

The general function of the space, the deck landscape design and the budget or cost of deck construction are important factors to consider when building a deck around a pool or spa.

Swimming pool or spa deck landscaping will require a number of factors to consider for it to have a nicely built and well designed space. Decks are great additions in any pool or spa. It is an important component in enjoying any spa or poolside activity. This is where lounging, shading, and sunbathing usually takes place. Before building a deck structure around pools and spas know the following things to consider:

General function of the space

Starting a deck construction must begin with evaluating t he general function of the space available around a pool or spa. It is important to know whether the side space would be intended for an extended outdoor area or would only be limited for a poolside surface only. Having this evaluation in mind is already considering whether the deck construction is viable for the available space. Also as the planning goes along, one can consequently have an idea of the deck design and cost estimates. Understanding the general function of the intended deck space would be serve as the initial feasibility study of starting a deck construction around a pool or spa. Also, determine if the pool decks or decking around spas are intended for a short-term or long term usage before planning the decking design.

Deck landscape design

Once the functionality and over all use is already determined, the design and deck landscape will then be laid out. The appropriate color scheme and deck pattern must be well chosen to fit the pool or spa area. Set to consider the design used in the pool coping when planning for a deck landscape. The deck design should fit with the function intended for building a deck. Simple and direct deck ledge is advisable for smaller deck areas to maximize the functionality of space rather than beautifying the limited poolside area. If the pool side is wider, a well-designed deck structure can add drama and attraction to the pool. Rolled bond beams can also be a great alternative to decking options, especially when the pool side or spa has a limited space.

Budget or cost of deck construction

After choosing the deck landscape and design, the budget or cost of deck construction materials can now be decided upon. Set the decking budget and canvass for the costing of materials. It is important to know your budget to be able to determine the appropriate materials to use. Materials could vary from natural stones, wood, marble, etc. Just make sure that appropriate decking materials are slip resistance to maximize safety.

Once all of these following considerations are met and cleared out, it is time for you to have your very own spa or pool deck. Have fun and enjoy the goodness of having one.

Deck Building- How to Design an Attractive Deck

To transform your ordinary deck into a beautiful and comfortable one, you should start with a professional deck design tailored to your home. Every home offers various prospects for building a creative design for an attractive and useful deck. A truly attractive deck design is one that incorporates your existing home and garden. If you own an older home, chances are that you have a wood deck that needs replacing. When considering a new or replacement, it is best to consider how it will fit into the existing landscape.

Some considerations for having a deck designed appropriately for your home are listed below:
The main objective of building a good deck is designing a deck that can be merged into pre-existing surroundings without being blatantly intrusive. Additionally, there are subtle factors to consider when deciding to build, such as if you want to build a deck in a shady area or with a sunny southern exposure. Do you want privacy from your neighbors? Is your property near a busy street with lots of? If so then consider the use of shrubbery, walls or fences to create a private environment.

Make sure to consider placement before building your deck. Placing a deck near the living room can cause problems as the foot traffic will soil your carpets, whereas placing the wood deck next to the kitchen makes it easy to move food and dish es back and forth while eating outside on the deck. You may also consider using large sliding glass doors to give you a great view and to make the outdoors look even more inviting.

To make your deck design more attractive, you can use affordable yet unique deck furniture. You will be surprised what you can buy in the off season.

The best way to give your deck the feeling of multiple spaces is to divide it into multiple levels or sectioned off areas. You can have an area for reading, lounging or sunning and another area for dining, entertaining and cooking.

Designed properly, deck building can provide innumerable hours of enjoyment for you, your friends and family as well as increase the value of your home!

What to Look For in a Decking Contractor

When considering a new deck or fence you face a lot of different decisions, including the style, materials, size, and budget of the project. In addition, a large decision in the process is deciding on which fencing anddeck contractor to hire for your project. Hiring a contractor will impact the outcome of the other decision, including the pricing, style, and quality of your deck. Before you sign a contract with a builder, pay attention to the following things:

Licensing and Insurance

Make sure the contractor is officially licensed in your state before hiring them. Building a deck requires obtaining the correct permit materials and without a licensed contractor, you may run into legal trouble. Also ask for proof of insurance before a builder begins construction. They should always carry general liability, as well as workers compensation insurance. Without both of these, the home owner may be held responsible for on-site injury.

Work Portfolio

Look for aportfolio of work that your contractor has done before. Seeing their portfolio will give you a peek into their validity, quality, experience and style. The more examples they can provide the better.

Customer Testimonials + Reviews

Always check for customer reviews andtestimonials about their work to see if it is a reputable company or just a scam. Check with the better business bureau, first. If they have had any official complaints you will be able to find a record of it, there, and if they aren't listed in the BBB, look elsewhere. Next, perform a Google search for reviews about their work. This will help you find both positive and negative feedback, if it's out there. Finally, read the testimonials they feature on their website. This will reinforce the positive feedback you may have found on the web, with solid recommendations from their previous clients. If they don't list testimonials on their website, don't be shy about asking for references directly.

Project Proposal, and Rendering

Make sure you get a project proposal about your construction project prior to signing a contract or hiring a company. Any legitimate contractor should provide afree consultation with a proposal, which would estimate the time, materials and cost associated with your new construction. Once you have approved the proposal, ask for a detailed sketch or rendering of your future deck or fence, before construction begins. You should have a clear vision of what the end product will look like, the materials it will be made of, how long it will take, and how much it will cost, before the project hits the ground.

Standard Payments and Policies

Areputable contractor will provide you with their detailed standard payment policies and construction guidelines before requesting a signed contract. Avoid any contractors who aren't clear about their process. The typical standard for the decking industry is a 30% deposit prior to construction. If any contractor asks for more than this, be wary.

DIY Deck Tools Guide

Starting any decking project can sound overwhelming to start with. Trying to decide what type of deck to construct can be a challenge by itself. Once that decision has been manufactured, the true fun begins. You will find choices between deck fasteners and choices involving the different styles of screws and nails. You can find choices in how and which sealer to use and choices within the gap spacing that's needed is or desired. This article assist with guide you in the many tools that exist which will make your deck building project easier and faster.

Let's begin with the countless varieties of nails and screws available. How will you determine which is better? It has been proven again and again that screws holds tighter and longer than nails, making screws the most obvious choice. Always choose a high grade stainless scre w, specially when installing high end decking materials. Anything less could cause corrosion and stain the region round the screw. Pardon the pun, but, in terms of the feel of your deck, why could you want to screw that up?

With the screws, I recommend a cordless screw gun by having an adjustable clutch. An adjustable clutch will save you many tips and screws since it insures you don't over torque the screws during installation.
If installing hardwood decking, Furthermore , i recommend pre-drilling an airplane pilot hole for the metal screws having a high speed drill bit. This actively works to your benefit by 50 percent ways; It'll keep your screws from breaking because they are screwed to the extremely dense hardwood, and it'll keep your hardwood from splintering later on when movement is but guaranteed.

There are lots of brands of deck fasteners available today, but only some will really hold up. Some deck fasteners require extra tools making installation more complex than it has to be. Keep it uncomplicated. You would like to get a fastener made from quality material; the one that will hold the densest of hardwoods. To make this happen strength as well as simplicity of use, I prefer a good edge mount system which has a metal insert.

Some deck fasteners designed today works extremely well on either hardwood or composite decking making them quite versatile. These fasteners could be secured and attached by placing a screw throughout the fastener and along in to the joist, allowing composite decking to naturally proceed its length. The fasteners may also be secured and attached by placing a screw in a 45 degree angle through your hardwood and into the joist, allowing hardwoods to maneuver on its width even while keeping uniform gap spacing.

Another highlight is help in the marketplace in terms of straightening warped or bowed deck boards. Board straightening tools do just what the name implies. Nothing could be more irritating than trying to place the following deck board down and realizing it is bowed beyond use. You can find tools that will slip over your joist through the easy and pull of an handle , straighten that board in order that it might be easier secured. One tool was made available just recently that cam locks into place, holding the board for you, providing you with a automatically chance to work with your deck with no assistance. This tool alone can save you a lot of time and frustration.

If you are the first deck builder or perhaps the seasoned professional, there are deck tools offered to make any job easier and less cumbersome. Following these helpful tips, you too will soon realize installing a hardwood or composite deck doesn't have being so frustrating.

Fact-file of Northern Virginia Deck

The Virginia deck and fence manufacturers have got a very difficult task to do. On one hand they have to deal with the appropriate design of decks, for them to look good, while on the other, they need to manage the mechanics of the deck to save it from instability. These Northern Virginia Deck builders have a particular format on which the decks are built up. Let us have a look at the guidelines set forth.

The building up of the deck is done by using one substance, mainly and that is aluminum. These revolutionary products have been approved of their quality and structural correctness. These have even been approved by the Building Authorities, world over. The 2006 IRC guide instructs the Virginia deck and fence manufacturers on how to set up a deck that includes fences, railings, stairs etc. With the guidelines clear in your mind, you can even build up the deck with minimal assistance from the manufacturers and contractors. Most of the expansion processes today, involve the usage of metallic railings. Usage of aluminum for the reconstruction purpose is a good alternative as the decks gain timeless quality and beauty. The cast iron and wrought iron railings are neither very expensive not do they deteriorate with time. This handcrafted material will provide artistic look to your deck. Uniqueness of the deck is one aspect, most people emphasize upon. The fences and the railings are built up in a manner to escort the inimitable features of the deck. The scenic glass balusters, aluminum balusters and classic round make the deck look exquisite. The glasses used in the deck can also be chosen from over 300 categories, primarily with stained and solar glass. They also help in keeping the Northern Virginia Deck hot. Spacing between the deck edges and the home walls is also a very important feature for the safety and strength of the deck. The spacing between the deck walls and beams is also important for aerodynamic structure of the deck. Plastic spacers and jointers also allow for excellent drainage and make the deck free from debris and excess moisture. In order to make your deck look good, proper light arrangements have to be taken care of. These light displays make the deck look wonderful, especially at dusk time. The Northern Virginia Deck manufacturers work professionally to complete your deck with the allotted deadline. They all are competent enough to inform you about the material and labor cost, beforehand. Besides, they also work efficiently to save your precious time and money. This will, thus help you do the building work yourself, or employ any contractor. The charges of such material quotations are $99 and this includes all the prerequisite knowledge that you may require about the decks. They can even construct a plan for your deck . The fencing work of the Virginia deck and fence is one thing that adds glory to your structure. Aluminum or wooden fences are the options available for you. These are the most appropriate accessories available for your deck. The designing of the fence can be done to enhance the glory of the deck or can be a bit traditional.

Benefits of Hidden Deck Fasteners

Deck fasteners are rapidly gaining ground as the tool of choice by professionals and do-it-yourself homeowners. Why has the fastening installation method surpassed top down screw and nail installation? You see, hundreds of thousands of homes face problems of structural stability, not to mention, messy injuries. Nail pops, broken screws, and warped boards have plagued the warmer months of many homeowners who want to enjoy family time on their deck, but can't because of its deteriorating condition. Maintenance issues like these could have been avoided if hidden fasteners were utilized.

What makes deck fasteners the best fastening tool? The fastener is recommended these days because they can be easily installed, offer a tighter hold to the joist supports, and create a truly pristine looking surface. Let's examine each of these points.

What makes hidden fasteners easy to install? Well, if you choose a fastener that doesn't require extra tools or odd and strenuous under-the-deck install techniques, you'll have a much easier time. There are hidden deck fasteners out there that don't need additional unnecessary and costly tools. All you should ever need is a cordless screw gun, a drill bit, screw tip and some stainless steel screws. Many fastener kits have these included, except the screw gun of course. If you're using pre-grooved composite material or pre-grooved hardwood material, then you've got everything you need. However, if you're using regular decking, you can rent a biscuit jointer or router from Lowe's, Home Depot, or your local hardware store to neatly cut your grooves. That's it. Anything more and you're spending too much money.

Now that you've got all the necessary tools, you can start installing deck fasteners. Hopefully, you've chosen fasteners that, as mentioned above, don't need sledgehammers and cumbersome cartridges to install. Many professional deck builders and contractors are recommending hidden deck fasteners that have the screws installed diagonally.

Why are deck fasteners that need to be installed diagonally superior? While not getting into a physics lesson, recent studies conducted by a German university concluded that installing screws at an angle creates a firmer, stronger, and more enduring hold to the joist. It's all about weight distribution, as well hardwood decking expansion and contraction. During the year hardwood decking will expand and contract as the moisture content in the air fluctuates. If you use top down screws to install your decking, you'll find out in a few years that around each of those screws or nails, that the area around the screw has darkened. You might also see splits start protruding. Wood rot, decay, and splinters are a direct result of this, dare I say, primitive form of deck fastening. However, when you install screws diagonally through the edge of one side of the decking, you're alleviating th e pressure the wood would normally endure. You also get a smoother, safer, and better looking deck surface. With composite decking fasteners, you don't have to worry about diagonal installation; you can screw straight down into the joist to fasten composite decking. Why? Unlike hardwoods, composite decking expands and contracts on its length. As a result, you can install composite decking fasteners straight down into the joist because the decking material does not have the same pressures that hardwood decking endures.

Ultimately, years from now you don't want to look at your deck with worry and, in worse cases, disgust. Installing fasteners is the right thing to do for the long term health of your deck. When you buy the best fasteners for your specific and desired decking material, you'll have peace of mind knowing that you're investing in a structure that adds to your quality of life. Avoid excessive deck maintenance. Install your deck with hidden deck fasteners.

Backyard Deck Design

The snow is gone for the time being at least. And while spring may not have officially sprung just yet, I'm betting that the milder temperatures, visible lawns, and occasional bouts of sunshine have a lot of homeowners thinking about getting outside again. This is also the time when people start thinking about building a deck.

After all, it's so much easier to envision a new deck with all the snow out of the way. So what does your vision include? A place to gather with friends and family? Space for a grill and outdoor dining? Maybe a hot tub?

Whatever you imagine your ideal outdoor living space to be, it is intensely personal. There is no "one-size-fits-all" deck. And yet, there are a few key points that everyone should consider when designing their dream deck. These are just a few of the items a lot of homeowners overlook:

How much privacy will you want? It's easy to forget that, depending on the size of your yard and the layout of your neighborhood, being on a deck can sometimes feel like being on stage. Not that you have anything to hide, but it's much easier to relax when you don't feel like your in the spotlight for all the neighbors to see. You can minimize that feeling with the proper railing or by including fencing or landscaping in your backyard deck plans.

How much maintenance do you want to do on your deck? The materials you choose to build your deck out of will determine how often you need to clean and refinish it. PVC coated Composite decking from TimberTech requires very little maintenance beyond occasional cleanings. Pressure treated decking will need to be cleaned, brightened and recoated about every two years. Cedar decks can require annual cleaning and sealing depending on the deck stain used, to maintain their integrity.

Will the deck in direct sunlight or in a shaded area? This is an important question because it will impact how and when you can enjoy the deck and can affect the maintenance requirements spelled out in the previous question. If your deck will be constantly bombarded by direct sunlight, you may want to consider adding a pergola to shade the area so it will be more comfortable for you and less susceptible to damage from the sun.

Where do the prevailing winds come from? Everyone enjoys a nice summer breeze, but summer winds can be downright annoying. They can make it difficult to carry on a conversation and can blow cups and plates right off a table. Accounting for the prevailing wind patterns and including a windbreak in your deck design can make all the difference.

Again, those are just a few points that all too often get overlooked in deck design. There are certainly many other things to consider when you hire a deck builder. For example:

What type of deck amenities will you include in your plans? Where will you locate the deck furniture? Do you have sufficient room to walk around the furniture when people are seated? What do you want to use the deck for? How often will you use it? What time of year? How many people will use it?

These are all good questions that we discuss with each of our clients before breaking ground on a new deck. We understand that time spent outside is all too short and you want a deck that lets you make the most of every minute.

Deck Construction, Refinishing, and Staining to Optimize your Outdoor Living Area

Decks can provide that seamless opportunity to add elegance, a sense of style and personality to your homes. Decks are a much more cost effective choice than adding a patio or a new room. They are one of the most useful home developments you can bring about, that's why the number ofdeck installationsis increasing every year. Some say decks are built to take advantage of scenery while others believe it's built to keep you more comfortable in your house than you already are, regardless if there's a view or not.

Whenbuildinga deckthe choice of materials to be used is very important. This determines the sturdiness and the durability of the decks. Proper care is also another factor that contributes to its lasting beauty and usefulness.Waterproofing is also important for enduringness. So it is advisable to have a deck waterproofing for additional lasting features.

Decks are perfect for barbecue, small parties and other warm weather get-togethers. No wonder deck construction has become a fad. They definitely add value to your house and, I should say, they are a must-have.

Regarding materials, majority of decks are made of wood. Some go with vinyl. Wood, according to a couple ofdeck builders, is one of the best materials for deck. It lasts for a long time and it always gives you that warm feeling. It is also lesser expensive compared to vinyl. On the other hand vinyl is also beneficial. They are proven to withstand extreme exposure to cold and heat compared toold wood. Vinyl is also synthetic so no fungi or unwanted organisms stay on it. It is also easy to install and there won't be a lot of maintenance costs.

A good designer should be able to usehardwood deckingin a creative way so as to bring out as well as complement the natural aura of your house's outdoor areas. You should be careful not to overuse it though as most people following this trend are prone to do. Usehardwood deckingjudiciously to complement your house and outdoors design, not to overwhelm it.

Hardwood deckingis beautiful as it is but regular care and maintenance also play a role in prolonging the life of your hardwood deck. Regular brushing with a good stiff broom will do the trick. Once a year, it is recommended that you give yourhardwood deckinga more thoroughcleaningusing a pressure spray or a deck cleaner which is formulated to remove grease and discoloration while restoring the look of the wood. Keeping the deck surface clean in this way not only keeps it looking like new it also reduces theconditionsthat cause any surface to be slippery when wet. After giving yourhardwood deckinga goodcleaning, you can then apply a clear water repellant coating to help prevent fading of the wood's natural hue.

As spring approaches, begin to contemplate those summer evenings spend grilling or just generally relaxing on your home's deck. Whether you need new deck construction, deck staining, or deck refinishing, now is the time to optimize your outdoor living space.

Compare Pine Wood to Ipe Decking

Ipe decking is world-renowned for its durability and natural resistance to mold, mildew, fungus, and insects. In addition, because ipe wood features natural oils and is extremely dense, it also is able to resist both rot and decay more than any other hardwood and composite decking material. Many homeowners and deck builders prefer to build a deck with ipe over pine because of those unique natural qualities.

The main reason why people end up settling for a pine wood deck is because it is cheap. Aside from that, pine wood has been the bane of many homeowners who thought that pine decking would be easy to maintain and look good for years. What companies wont tell you about pine wood and pressure treated pine is this; the chemicals used to pressure treat the pine have the potential to be very harmful.

In fact, up until 2003, pine wood that was turned to pressure treated decking was infused with Arsenic. Thats right a chemical that is used for rat poison and various other poisons was used on decks throughout the country. Another sad fact is that it was not uncommon for one 12 foot 2x6 piece of pine wood to contain around 27 grams of Arsenic. That one single pressure treated pine board has enough arsenic in it to kill over 200 people. It wasnt until there were too many lawsuits and bad press to count that, in 2003, the industry voluntarily stopped using arsenic on pine wood. Currently the chemicals used to treat a pine deck are Amine Copper Quat (ACQ) and Copper Azone (CA). The jury is still out on whether these chemicals have any long-term side effects.

Also, aside from the chemicals another reason why ipe decking is vastly superior to pressure treated pine wood is because over time a pine deck ends up looking very unappealing and can even prove harmful. If youve ever seen a pine deck that was a couple of decades old, youll notice right away that the pine wood eventually starts to check and crack and looks extremely weathered. Also, many children and even cautious adults often get splinters from this inferior decking.

Last, but not least, there money to consider. Yes, building a deck made of ipe wood does require more of an investment. However, when you compare pine wood to ipe decking, the overall return on investment is crystal clear. Pine decking has a higher overall cost when you consider that it costs more to maintain thanks to treatments and even the replacement of whole pine wood deck boards. On the other hand, a deck made from ipe wood can last for decades before it requires treatment. You do have two choices when it comes to treating ipe and its all a matter of taste. For the most part though, it is recommended that you use deck oil for the first and second year. Then depending on climate and exposure to the elements, you may be able to treat your ipe deck every other year.

Also, when you consider that because of its overall density, an ipe deck is much less likely to bow, crack, or decay, you can spend many wonderful years spending quality time with your family on an ipe deck that is safe and beautiful all at the same time. Be sure to work with only highly reputable deck builders and lumber companies before you move ahead with your deck building plans. Ultimately, the decision is yours and m aking sure you take proper care of your deck is critical.

Deck Construction

It's that time of year again. It's time to enjoy the great outdoors.

Time to refurbish that weathered deck. Or replace it altogether.

Decks come in all shapes and sizes. From small and basic to large and multi leveled with curves and angles. Decks can be constructed from a number of materials. Treated pine, redwood, cedar, composite, PVC and aluminum the choices are many.

The most popular and least expensive would be pressure treated lumber. Although it is the least expensive does not mean that it is not a quality Deck Building Material. Properly cared for a deck constructed of this affordable building material can last for many years. It can be purchased at any Home Improvement Center making it readily available. The majority of decks built in the US today are constructed of this material. In fact treated lumber is used in the structure of decks built with other decking materials.

In the Charlotte, Concord NC area www.goodtydingsconstruction.com is a quality Deck Builder you can trust to build you the deck of your dreams.

The second most popular decking material used today is composite decking. The material cost for composite decking can be three to five times more than pressure treated lumber. There is a higher installation cost due to installation techniques. The up side is that composite decks don't require the maintenance that treated decks require. They do require cleaning, mold and mildew will grow on it. Composite decks don't split and warp as lumber will. The durability and appearance are worth the increased cost.

In the Cumming, GA area www.american-decks.com can build you a quality deck.

PVC decking is a high quality decking material that requires even less maintenance than composite decking. Mold and mildew does not grow on it as readily as on composite decks. There is no wood in PVC decking as there is in composite. It withstands the elements better than composite or treated lumber. The color is more stable than other materials. PVC railing is vastly superior to composite or lumber. Whether you choose lumber, composite or PVC for your deck, PVC or vinyl handrails should be used. Treated and composite railing will twist and bow while PVC and Vinyl will remain strait.

In the Huntersville, Cornelius North Carolina area www.goodtydingsconstruction.com can build your deck from any material that you choose. Hand railing can be installed on porches, decks or stairs.

Another high quality decking material is Aluminum Decking. Aluminum Decking is the most stabile of the decking materials. It has a simulated wood grain and comes in a multitude of colors. It does not expand and contract as much as PVC, composite or lumber. There is matching aluminum railing. It is the longest lasting and most durable decking material. It stays cooler in the heat of the day depending on color. Aluminum deck boards fit together and keep the area below the deck dry. This makes it ideal for a deck over a patio. Unfortunately aluminum decking is the most expensive. But it will last forever with virtually no maintenance.

10 New Deck Building Planning Considerations

10 New Deck Building Planning Considerations

Are you considering building a new deck onto your home? Be sure to plan ahead to find the best possible deck design to perfectly match your home aesthetics.

Review the following deck planning considerations.

1 Deck Location
Design the new deck location area similar tobuilding a room onto your home. Would you end a room in the middle of a window? No. Remembering to keep your deck away from windows by up to two feet will prevent your looking out the window at a railing. Many decks have an entrance to the home by the kitchen through the dining area. In areas of the country with heavy snowfall, you may want to step down a step or two to keep standing snow away from the door t hreshold and laying against your door. 4" lower than the door is a common minimum height in snow country.

2 Site Plan
When you purchased your home your realtor should have included a copy of our site/ plot plan in your contract. Your local zoning department may have a copy on file if you do not have a plot plan. This plan shows you the property setbacks and easement lines that require you to not build past certain parameters. Your local building department can help you with this when you apply for your new deck building permit. In some townships and counties you may not be required to apply for a building permit.

3 Deck Layout and Design
Begin by getting a feel for the size of the new deck you will be building. Use two foot increments when deciding your deck size. The reason for this is lumber is cut to 8', 10', 12', and 16' lengths. This will reduce scrap materials and save you money. Remember that decks are NOT symmetrical to the back of the home. Decks are most common to to one side or the other. This is an important consideration in the layout of your new deck. To get a feel for your deck layout try using scrap lumber or a garden hose to layout the new deck shape.

4 Deck Size
To determine your deck size list the uses of the deck. Then ask yourself how much room will I need? The average outdoor area is between 12% - 18% of the square footage for the home. Most people use their deck for dining or entertaining outside. Built-in hot tubs, spas, screen rooms, and outdoor kitchen areas are becoming more popular in modern deck designs.

5 Consider a Deck Dining Area
Will you be dining on your deck? One modern trend is to build a bump-out (It may be an octagon) to push the table and chairs off the main deck floor and give the dining area a designated space.

6 Privacy Walls
Is privacy needed from your neighbors or your street? Deck builders offer a privacy wall option. If this is limited to the sides of the deck it avoids the "feeling of being trapped in a fish bowl."

7 Deck Access
How will you get off and on the deck? The side of the house where you walk to get to the back yard may be the best spo t to enter the new deck. Stairways are heavily regulated by your local building department. A width of 36" is as narrow as you can build. The rise (height between steps) should be between 7" - 8". The run or "tread" of the step should b between 10" - 12" deep. Large staircases are nice to look at and are appealing to quickly access your backyard, still most staircases are 36" - 48" wide. If you have a two story deck consider a landing midway in the stairway. This will minimize a fall and reduce injuries. Each township or county will have specifications of how a staircase is attached to the deck frame and whether or not it will need a railing.

8 Grill Location
Where will your grill go? Keep your grill by the door but not next to the house. You also have the option to run a permanent gas line run under your deck to your grill. This will save you the trips to refill your propane tank.

9 Shade Solutions
Will you need shade? One solution is to install a c ustom awning over your deck. This can be very costly and may even exceed the price of your new deck. One popular alternative choice is to build a pergola or arbor into the design of the deck. A pergola can be installed n one of a number of different styles, shapes, and materials. Pergolas and arbors provide some shade to the area they cover. If you need total shade consider a roof covered deck or a screened in porch option.

10 Deck Seating
Would you rather have a railing around the deck or seating? In many areas if your new deck is higher than 18" off the ground you will need a railing around the deck perimeter. A typical railing height is 36 inches. If your deck stands higher than 10 feet off the ground a 42" - 48" tall railing may be needed. If you are building a wooden deck and you would like to have seating built into the design an option is composite lumber. This composite (plastic) lumber helps to eliminate splintering and warping that happens over time wi th wood seating.

Bottom Line - Be sure the deck fits your needs and desires before the process of building the new deck is started. Then check the deck builders list of references to ensure the quality you desire for the construction of your new deck will happen.

Decks and Houses

Homes more than properties, they are meaningful to every homeowner. There are times when a house would actually not just shelter the family living in it. Most of the time, a house would shelter memories and the happy events that transpired for the whole family. From a first son's birth, to the first step he took even when he goes for college. All of these memories may all be stored in a house's unseen attic. Far from what we know now, a house still holds a lot more stories than what we and our family knows about us.

For this reason, a house should be well maintained and well taken cared of. There should be a constant repair of all the things that are falling apart in a house. If this won't be done, there would be an inevitable slide in the years of memories that were sheltered in the house. Come to think of it, a house is definitely more than just an investment or a property named after a person. A house has a deeper meaning.

A house eventually fall s into pieces. Just like any other object in this world, a house will eventually give in and succumb to the things like air, wind, and the different climates that are getting erratic as of late. With this, the more homeowners should be aware on how they could have their houses fixed. Of course as a homeowner, I would like to have my house be in 100% condition rather than 100% on its way to demise.
In today's time, there are so many ways in order to fix a home. There are actually tools and equipments available in leading hardware stores that would ensure a job well done. If you know how to fix your own home, then lucky for you. If you are just learning to do the trade, give yourself a break since contractor job is really not an easy task. If this is the case, just go ahead and give contractors a call.

If you also want things to be built and updated, there are also companies who could get the job done. There are a great number of contractors who can actually make a house from good looking to stunning. Take a look at the deck contractors of NY. They see to it that their occupation as deck builders lives to the expectation of their clients. This is why the deck in queens' homes is actually looking good as of late. Ev en state island decks are also getting the revamp they need and also the Brooklyn decks.

Nowadays, homes will not only look good but also look updated. Today, there is actually no reason for a house not to look good after all the contractors are actually present nowadays. From repair to construction to the different odd works being offered for a house; there is no reason for a homeowner to destroy his own house with his own doing. Since houses have deeper meaning, it is only right that it is well protected.

Composite Deck Review

There are varying opinions and reviews out there regarding Composite Deck Materials (good and bad) so I may as well add mine to the mix.

Composite deck materials or WPC (wood, plastic, composite) are slowly gaining popularity. According to a market study done by: Principia Partners for new, remodeled and replacement decks market share of deck boards based on millions of linear feet, from 2004-2009 WPC has gained 14% over pressure treated softwoods or PTS.

While 65% of the decks installed are made with PTS, the consumers are realizing that the initial lower cost is being offset with the almost yearly maintenance. This coupled with the "Go Green" revolution is giving rise to the increase in popularity with WPC.

The cost of a composite deck can be up to 3 1/2 times higher and will still require some upkee p. There are lots of deck builders that have experience working with WPC so finding a deck contractor for WPC deck construction should be a easy task.

Some of the Advantages and Disadvantages
1- Composite decks can have a higher heat retention but can be offset by purchasing a lighter color.
2- The cost is higher than a wood deck but you have more choices on deck design with your deck ideas.
3- Surface is of composite decking is nonskid vs wood deck with stain applied.
4- No splintering or warping that you get with PTS.
5- No reapplying of weather sealant/stain every 2-3 years although some of the manufacturers recommend a light application.
6- WPC has wood fibers with the recycled plastics and when cut and left exposed are subject to rot and mold unless it has additives such as zinc borate.
7- WPC contains plastic, either polyethylene which is recycled and more malleable plastic and wood fiber, or polypropylene which is virgin plastic which is more rigid.
8- WPC can stain with oil, rust, wine, chemicals or grease from your BBQ grill but can be minimised with an approved protectant.
9- Some of the WPC's are softer than others and will scratch easier.
10- You can choose from a variety of colors, textures and wood grain simulations.
11- They call WPC environmentally friendly but yet the chemicals that are needed to clean are not quite so environmentally friendly.
12- If scratched or stained you have to replace and can not refinish like you can with wood.

I have been in deck construction for a long time and have seen products come and go. I like working with the different brands of WPC and have been very pleased with ease of installation as well as the appearance
but only time will tell if it will last as some of the claims made.

If you are considering deck construction with WPC then first do a online search on the composite's that are available and what some of the pro's and con's are so that you can make an informed decision.

Here is a short list of some of the more popular Composite Deck Materials available: Trex, Timbertech, Correct Deck, Choice Deck, Ultradeck, Veranda Decking and Lattitudes.

Options for a deck - Woodland Deck Company of Ohio

Serving the greater Akron and Cleveland areas of Northeast Ohio, the operations manager of Woodland Deck Company offers some clarification on deck and decking options.

For decking:

Our first option is wood decking. Most common in this area is Southern Yellow Pine decking that is pressure treated with chemicals to resist decay. Other options in the decking line of soft wood are:
- Western Red Cedar decking
- White Cedar decking
- Redwood decking
These are the most common kinds but soft wood like Cypress and Siberian Larch have also found a place in the market. Long term results vary with all these but all wood decking will require some kind of maintance to improve longetivity and appearance. There are also hardwood options for decking. Most of these are imported for the Rainforest or Tropical regions
Ipe
Cumaru
Tigerwood
Teak
While the hardwood decking options are good for wear resistance, they do still require maintenance. Also if choosing hardwood decking be sure to verify that the lumber for your deck has been harvested responsibly and that the importers can verify it through documentation.

There is also a wide variety of man made low maintance decking available. Some of the more common in our area would be Trex, Timbertech, Azek Deck, Fiberon, Evergrain and Correct Deck. These will always need less maintenance then an all wood deck. They all will require cleaning but will not require sealing or painting. In our experience we have found that the PVC types of decking require less cleaning than composite types. If this is the product you choose to go with, put in the necessary research on the product qualities and differences as well as the installation instructions. If you prefer to hire a deck builder, these manufacturers will have a list of certified installers.
