Patio Sails: Chic Outdoor Shades

Patio sails or commonly referred to as shade sails are gaining a lot of popularity in providing cover and protection not only to patios but to any outdoor space which needs to be shaded. These products are enjoying a tremendous growth in demand not only in the United States and UK but also in Australia, New Zealand and many other countries around the globe.

What makes patio sails unique is its ability to convert your lifeless looking porch, patio, balcony, deck, garden and any outdoor living space into a vibrant, breath-taking, stylish, and dazzling atmosphere. They are not only contemporary and stunning in looks because of its wide variety of bold colors, designs and geometric shapes and sizes, the sails also easily blend with any type of architectural adornments.

History tells us that the Greeks, being great ship builders and boat lovers, used their sails to provide coverage and protection from the sun, winds and rains every time they docked. It had been recorded historically that even the Romans made use of sail shades when they had important events or celebrations in their coliseums.

Patio sails compete with other outdoor coverage protectors like retractable awnings, patio umbrellas, canopies etc. All of these accessories and utilities have their own advantages and disadvantages. It is up to your taste, objectives and personal preference which one will you use. It may be an excellent idea to combine patio sails with awnings and patio umbrellas if you have multiple outdoor areas to be shaded and protected.

Sails are very versatile and flexible in its various residential, commercial and industrial applications. Residential sails are available in pre-fabricated and custom-built forms. Most are reasonably priced and highly affordable. For commercial and industrial use, most shade sails are customized and are more expensive depending on many variables as well as the complexity of the project. Most sa ils are water and mildew resistant and easy to install and maintain.

Pre-fabricated sails are made of high-quality, seamless, wide fabrics with marine-grade type 316 stainless steel corner rings. They can come in rectangle, triangle, square and right triangle in various sizes and colors using UV and sun-resistant thread with durable webbing and reinforced corners. Commercial, grand standard size, premium pre-made sails are extremely strong and can stand up to just about any weather conditions. High quality materials using ASTM-E 84, NFPA-701-1999 and California Fire Marshall-13115 fire standard fabrics are used even for pre-made standard size shade sails by many manufacturers.

When custom-made sails are done, different types of shade cloth and fabrication methods are employed. Measurements from mounting point to mounting point are important. Patio sail manufacturers suggest that installing attachment points are made first before submitting the measurem ents for any request for quote or advice in design layout, structure and installation.

The perimeter of each sail is usually designed with a catenary curve to control the tension of the sail thereby creating an aesthetically pleasing sight to see taut fabrics without any sagging or flapping in the wind. Every shade sail is constructed with either nylon material or stainless steel cable in the perimeter. Stitching can use UV resistant, outdoor thread and lock stitching. Majority of sails are made with Polytex Rainbow Z-16, Coolaroo Sythesis 95, Comtex and Sunbrella fabrics.

Not only are these patio sales attractive and healthful in preventing sunburn and skin cancer by blocking up to 99% of the sun's harmful UV rays, it provides adequate shade for you, your family and guests to have fun and enjoy a pleasant and exciting day even during sunny, windy and rainy season and cut down air conditioning costs. When it comes to outdoor coverage and protector, how about deciding on the phenomenal patio sails!
